Understanding diabetes and everyday self-care

Prepared by the GSHER health education team · Updated 25 October 2026

Diabetes education should help you understand your own care and ask better questions. It should not make you afraid of every meal or promise a cure. GSHER’s eight-part series explains common questions in English, Hindi and Odia, with a workbook for each topic.

Begin with your own diagnosis

Ask which type of diabetes you have, what your reports mean and what targets your care team recommends. Type 1 diabetes requires insulin. Children, pregnancy and complex illness need individual care rather than an adult type 2 self-care plan.

Build a useful record

Keep medicine names, glucose results and questions together. Discuss food choices, movement, sleep and emotional difficulties with your care team. If monitoring is recommended, ask when to measure and what to do with the result. Avoid comparing your treatment with a neighbour’s.

Learn safely, one topic at a time

Our series covers reports, a balanced Indian plate, safe activity, sleep, medicines, protection of eyes and kidneys, and a first 90-day plan. Complete the corresponding workbook before moving on. Share practical difficulties with a family member who can help without blame.

What the course can and cannot provide

CR-DM499, Diabetes: A Full Explanation to a Common Man, is a published education course in three languages. Its CelluReva stages organise learning and habit practice. Education supports clinical care; it does not guarantee remission. Do not stop tablets or insulin, begin prolonged fasting or replace treatment with supplements without professional guidance.
